Writerly Wednesday - An Interview with Kathrine Wyvern

Happy hump day, folks! It's almost bed time here, but I'm pushing through the exhaustion of spending a day trying to hire a development chef to get this interview up, because I think this one you really want. Katherine Wyvern is here with her new release, WOMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. I can't wait to read this book - I think it's going to be something special. So without further ado, let's say hello to Katherine, Nina, and Julia/n.

Hi, Katherine!

Hello Naomi, and thank you so much for having me and my new release here on your blog today!!

You're welcome! Let's start with you telling us a little bit about your newest release.

Woman as a Foreign Language is the first book I wrote after a four years writer’s block. I almost thought I had lost the will or ability to tell stories, and then suddenly this exploded in my mind, and HAD to be told. It is the story of two gender-queer persons who meet by chance and find that they complement each other perfectly. Nina is an almost incurable tomboy who is struggling to express her feminine side and Julia/n is a beautiful cross-dresser who sometimes just needs to just shrug out of his masculine identity and be a beautiful woman. They both have a lot of darkness behind them, and it was beautiful to watch them finding the light together.

I'm so intrigued by these characters, and have been since I heard the title of the book! Was there any part of this story you found particularly tough to write? If so, why?

Not so much tough but painful, yes. In the story it was obvious from the start that Nina came from a history of early bullying and abuse, and originally I had intended to leave that as a memory she has to cope with. But that made for a lot of “telling”, and finally I decided to have Nina still living with her mother, to “show” some of the stuff she had had to put up with. That was tough, because Nina’s story is partly autobiographical and I really felt on my skin that I was closing her in a very dark place. But of course this made the story much stronger, and when she finds her freedom it is that much more exhilarating.

On the flip side, is there any part of this story you absolutely love, and why?

All of it, I think! I am really passionate about this book! But I particularly love the way Nina’s vision of Julia as an almost supernatural being slowly adjusts around Julian’s more earthy and solid persona, and yet still retains some of that initial reverence. One of my favorite lines in the story is when Nina tells Julia/n, towards the end, “I love you. I have loved you since the first day I saw you. I thought you were a goddess. I still do.” And I love how Julian’s incredible control over his body, voice, eyes and generally himself slowly falls apart as he falls in love with Nina.

I can't wait to read that scene! Changing directions a little bit, do you have a favourite genre to write in?

Not really, I am hopelessly eclectic, in fact. I love Fantasy and Sci/fi for the wonderful opportunity they offer of creating alternate realities and worlds, but I am also happy writing the occasional contemporary story. I like to include LGBT relationships in my books, but I also like straight and simple FM stories.

So are there any genres you haven't tried yet that you really want to?

I have a couple of paranormal stories slowly simmering in the back of my mind… Each has a few pages or chapters written, but they are not quite “there” yet. I am looking forward to exploring the magic in them!

Ah, the "almost ready stories." I know them well. Who are your biggest influences – they don't have to just be literary ones!

I think, writing-wise, Antonia S. Byatt. It is really presumptuous to compare my writings to hers, but if there is one writer whose prose really infuses my own voice, that is her. Patrick O’Brian too. His more humorous bits of dialogue and narrative have me in stitches, and they are definitely a constant inspiration. Outside of books I’d have to say, my husband. All of the heroes in my story have something of him in them … in and out of bed !

AS Byatt has been on my "to try" list for years. A friend recommended her books and I've just never got round to them. If you could have dinner with any three writers, living or dead, who would they be?

John Keats. It is incredible to think that all his magnificent poetry was written when he was so unbelievably young. I think he must have been a tremendously intense and sensitive soul. Tolkien, of course, an all-time favorite of mine, although it worries me that he tended to mumble quite a bit, which would make table conversation rather difficult. And Bill Bryson because he’s been to a lot of places, and he sounds like fun, and any dinner party needs a guest like that!

True! Keep the conversation flowing. Are there any books you can just read over and over again and never get sick of?

The Lord of the Rings. The whole Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian. And Possession by Antonia Byatt.

Following on from that, if you could recommend any book (beside your own) to everyone reading this, what would it be?

There you have me. I have been trying to find similar stories to host on my blog, but I am not going anywhere! There is quite a lot of Transgender romance being (self)published, but they are often MM stories in disguise or sex-transition stories, which is not the case with WaaFL. So for now, I’d have to say that WaaFL seems rather unique!

It's definitely not a story I've come across before, which is one of the things that intrigues me about it. Okay, the hardball question: tea or coffee?

Both, but preferably beer.

I think that's cheating, but I'll allow it! And last but not least, apart from writing, what are your great passions in life?

I am an obsessively creative person, and I love to MAKE things. I have dabbled in lots of different artistic mediums in my life, painting, textile art, woodwork, even cob building! I also really love gardening and animals… I have three cats, a dog, two horses, and a flock of ducks!

Oh, fantastic! You're living my dream life! Now, having found out a bit more about Katherine, it's time to get a closer look at Nina and Julia/n. Read on for an excerpt!

What do you do when the woman you want to be … is a man?

Nina’s abusive childhood left her feeling so vulnerable when wearing anything flimsier than combat boots that she has spent her whole adult life dressed like a gang boy. But when she meets the tall, glamourous, charismatic Julia (actually her cross-dressing neighbor, Julian, going out en femme), Nina is seized by an overwhelming and terrifying urge to finally express her own femininity.

Julia/n has not only a slightly split personality but also a thoroughly broken heart. What s/he wants most is a partner who will love both Julia and Julian. While Nina learns from Julia how to be a woman, Julian discovers that they might well be made for each other, but it will take a struggle against prejudice and a whole conservative mind-set before they can follow their hearts, and express their true, unique, and beautiful selves.

Flashback Friday - Three authors for the price of one!

Happy Friday, folks! I'm coming at you live from my sofa, because I've got a four-day weekend! The plan is simple: write, drink tea, watch cooking shows. Currently I'm in the "drink tea" part of the plan (although I've already written 500 words this morning, so basically everything is going well). Anyway! While I focus on those tasks, I'm leaving with three talented authors and a paranormal romance series with all the ingredients you need for a hella good time. Enjoy!

They say that when one door closes another shall open, but when Erica made her choice to stop a madman, she couldn’t have imagined the price that she would have to pay. The future she’d risked everything for had just changed forever.

The existence of the Dark Fae and their Goddess comes as a shock, but the fates had one more surprise in store for Erica and her mates in the form of orphaned twin babies who steal their hearts, but these children are not like the Fae Erica is familiar with. They come with powers that she and her husbands know nothing about. Dark Fae council will watch over them to decide if they are capable of raising the twins, making Ben, Erica and Leo feel the pressure of having their every move scrutinized.

When the twin’s dark powers begin to emerge, will one Fae Queen and two warrior shifters have what it takes to navigate the uncertain waters of parenting? …and will the Dark Fae council decide to let them try?

Excerpt:
Erica stopped in the doorway and turned to look back at her sleeping babies. The Goddesses truly did work in mysterious ways, she thought. She might not have had the pleasure of birthing the twins, but they were hers. She knew it with everything in her. They were hers!

Come on, love,” Ben whispered in her ear as he urged her to lean back against him. “Leave them to dream of all the mischief and grief they will cause us over the next few decades. Now that they’re asleep, let’s make the most of this time we have alone.”

Heat swirled within her, and she nodded. They had been Mommy, Poppa, and Daddy all day. Now it was time for Mommy to get her some.

****

Leo had gone on ahead to the bedroom and lit all the candles they had, creating a golden glow that made Erica look radiant when she entered moments later with Ben. The smile on her face when she looked his way still made his heart skip a beat, just as it had the very first moment he’d seen her. He would swear that if he didn’t have a shifter’s strength, the sheer joy he’d felt since bringing the babies home and seeing Erica blossom as a mother would have made his heart explode.

He couldn’t have anticipated how two small little beings could instantly repair the gaping hole that had been ripped into their souls when the Goddess Allyria had told them the price they would pay for Alefric’s demise. But here they were, starting a new journey together, albeit, this one filled with much less danger, and much more need for an endless supply of wet wipes, but certainly just as important as anything Leo had ever done in his life previous. They would love and protect these children, and they would raise them to be the kind of people who made both sides of the Veil a better place.

You look so resolved right now, Leo. What are you thinking about?” Erica stopped in front of him to gently caress his cheek with her hand.

Just about how lucky we are … and how lucky you’re about to get.” He leaned in to kiss her as he landed a quick smack to her jean covered ass that made her yelp and laugh into his mouth.

Now we’re talking,” Ben said. He quickly shucked off his own jeans and stepped up behind Erica to unbutton her top, revealing her soft, perfect breasts. He gently pulled back her wrists, using her top as a makeshift rope to bind them behind her. “How do you want it tonight, baby?”

Leo could tell from the quick increase in her breathing that she was in the mood for something a little edgier than “sweet” tonight.

Mmm, I think I know exactly what our naughty little mate is looking for, don’t I, baby?” He cocked one eyebrow at her, and her eyes grew hooded as she bit down on her lower lip, indicating that she knew exactly the type of evening he had in mind. “Ben, get on the bed, sitting with your back against the headboard. You, my love, strip off those clothes for me, now.”

About Maia Dylan:

Maia Dylan lives, loves and works in beautiful New Zealand.  She married her best friend and they have two adorable, but stubborn children who obviously take after their father.

Maia’s career has featured a lot of travel, and she has filled her time at airports and in the air with books, books and more books.  Her love of erotic paranormal romance has seen her amass a huge library.  She has been an avid reader and lover of ménage romances since she read her first book in this genre about three years ago.

Outside of writing, Maia loves to eat, so she loves to cook!  Her herb garden is legendary, but she still has issues getting tomatoes to grow.  She’s been a performer for years, and has even sung on international stages, she would love to own a classic Ford Mustang one day and of course have the opportunity to race it on a race track without fear of a speeding ticket.

Although ultimately her dream is to be able to write full time on a sandy beach with a Mai Tai at hand, she is quite happy to fit her writing in when she can.  As long as someone reads her books, gets a laugh and maybe come to love her characters and much as she does, then she feels that she is living her dreams no matter what!

Retro Reading - April Fools

Okay, I thought I hadn't read this one before. I certainly never owned it. But once I started reading the sarcastic old British butler's lines, I realised I must have borrowed it from someone, because all the repressed memories came flooding back. Yes, there's an old butler in this book. SPOILER: he turns out to be the true love interest.*

April Fools is the story of what happens when you're involved in a hit and run and try to cover it up. So, first up, this book has nothing to do with April Fools' Day beyond the prologue. I did wonder if Cusick's book was so named to avoid confusion with RL Stine's Point Horror magnum opus, Hit and Run, but that actually came out a year later, so I guess Cusick just thought April Fools had a sinister connotation begging to be explored.

But beyond the story opening with a sort-of-flashback to the night of April Fools, where our intrepid teens, Belinda, Hildy, and Frank, are driving home from a party and Frank tries to run another car off the road "as a prank" because he's the fucking worst, the plot has nothing to do with April Fools. Basically, the other car does go off the road, there's an explosion, and Belinda runs to try to help despite her friends telling her not to because, and this cannot be emphasised enough, Hildy and Frank are the fucking worst. But Belinda can't get close to the car because, you know, it's on fire. So she's left staring helplessly at the fiery wreck when she becomes convinced someone is watching her...someone who saw Frank trying to run another car off the road, who saw the second car go up in flames, and who can identify Belinda as being there because Frank and Hildy keep yelling her name and telling her to get back in the car and abandon the scene of the accident because THEY ARE THE FUCKING WORST.

So that's the set-up! This is a Point Horror book, so Belinda starts receiving creepy packages and messages indicating someone blames her for the car accident. She's freaked out and traumatised and guilty, and the only people she has to help her cope are Frank and Hildy.

Oh, okay. So Belinda is all alone with her trauma, then. The trauma of knowing she was involved in a drunken hit and run where people burned to death. I mean, that's a hard thing to deal with as a teenager, right? That's scarring! Surely Hildy, who was there, and whose boyfriend was the driver, must understand...

Oh, okay. But maybe Hildy is in denial! I mean, her boyfriend might be directly responsible for the loss of innocent lives! Surely she understands why this is troubling her best friend so much and she's just trying to protect herself from the reality of the situ...

Never mind then.

Anyway! Belinda is distracted from her guilty conscience, terrible friends, and creepy stalkerish packages by a tutoring job. A rich, annoying woman asks Belinda to tutor her step-son, Adam, because HE WAS RECENTLY MUTILATED IN A TERRIBLE CAR ACCIDENT and she doesn't want him falling behind on school. Stop me if you see where this is heading.

Adam is a prototypical Byronic menace, brooding around in the dark, making cryptic threats and harassing people by screaming "DON'T YOU FIND ME HIDEOUS?" at them whenever they ask how he is. He torments Belinda and glares at her through his bedroom window when she leaves the house, like an asshole. Everyone in this book is terrible apart from Belinda and Cobbs the Butler, basically. Adam does have a nice, gentlemanly step-brother called Noel who is, of course, just dashing and treats Belinda nicely. Like Help Wanted, there's a strong theme of "rich families have weird secrets," although it was nice to see the villains in this book aren't mentally ill, just greedy and murderous in a normal way. And, to be honest, their motivations are logical.

You know who's not logical in this book? Frank and Hildy. Plot twist: it turns out Frank was the one sending creepy packages to Belinda, because he's such a character and thought it would be hilarious to compound her trauma over the fatal accident he caused.** So Frank is a sociopath and Hildy completes enables this because Frank is cute and hilarious, allegedly, and so Hildy allows her best friend to be terrorised by her boyfriend because boys, I guess. Hildy sucks. But Belinda forgives her after they both nearly get killed by the bad guys, and then Hildy dumps Frank, so maybe there's hope for her.

But Belinda should kill off their friendship anyway.

I like Cusick's books, and I liked April Fools, but god fucking dammit, Belinda, you can do better! If there's a lesson to be taken from this book, it's that your friends suck and you should get rid of them and get a butler instead.

*In the sense that the last lines of the book are the teenaged heroine and him saying "I love you" to each other in a way that could totally be interpreted as a declaration of romantic love. It's literally like, "Oh Cobbs, I do love you." "And I love you, miss," and that's the end of the book, so I choose to believe this May-December relationship blossmed from there on.

**Actually, it turns out the villains deliberately caused the car accident, but Frank was literally and actually trying to run the other car off the road "as a joke" so of course Belinda believes him (and indirectly herself) to be responsible until she learns that, and even if Frank didn't actually cause the car crash he was still drunkenly trying to run another car off the road AS A FUCKING PRANK.

Flashback Friday - the best of LD Blakeley

Happy Friday, folks! I'll admit it felt like I wasn't going to make it this week. The day job has been so manic, I've gone into Red Queen mode - running just to stand still. But here we are, and I've stolen a few minutes to introduce you to LD Blakeley's book, BEST WORST EVER. Say hello!

Thanks for having me on today to tell you about Best Worst Ever. This story was my very first to be published so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I recently had my rights reverted, and knew I didn't want this novella to simply fade away. So I decided to give my boys a bit of a spruce-up. I redid the cover art, revised and edited the story and made it available once more. I hope you enjoy. :-)

Carey English spends his days planning extravagant parties and lavish weddings and generally making people’s lives brighter. He spends his nights wishing for a man he doesn’t have to share and who won’t try to drag him back into the closet. It doesn’t help that the man he wants most doesn’t need a closet to begin with — his straight best friend, Sky.

Skyler Wood has been dumped — again — just days before the holiday season, leaving him with an ex-fiancée, a nonrefundable New Year’s Eve getaway rental, and nothing to ring in the New Year but a broken heart. For Carey, rushing off to offer Sky a shoulder will either be the best decision he’s ever made—or it will lead to the worst heartbreak he’s ever experienced.

✽This is an edited & revised version of a previously published story. It has been expanded by approximately 1,400 words.✽

EXCERPT:

If there was one thing he knew about Sky, it was that he was as frugal as the day was long. And, judging by the other places he’d passed along the way, he was guessing the impressive exterior of this place matched a rather swanky, if not romantic, interior. Of course, idiot. Sky had rented the place thinking he’d be with his fiancée. Not his best friend.

He parked next to his friend’s SUV and stubbornly grabbed more than he could carry at once. Why make two trips when you can do it in one? Necessity might be the mother of invention, but laziness was definitely its big, bad daddy. Laden down with a suitcase and far too many bags of food and liquor, Carey used the toe of his boot to gently knock at the front door. “Sky? You in there? My hands are full, man, come open the door.” When there was no response, he tried again with the tip of his boot. “Mr. Darcy, are—”

His sentence was cut short as the door flew open. “Jesus! Hold your horses, Logan. I couldn’t hear you with the water running. I was just in the…”

Shower. He’d been in the shower. Carey knew this, not because he suddenly had the ability to read minds. Oh, no. He knew this because there, in front of him, stood all six foot four inches of Darcy Skyler Wood… dripping wet with nothing but a towel slung low around his hips. Shit.

Don’t stare. Don’t stare at that solitary drop of water as it slowly slides its way between the hard, flat planes of those perfect pecs. And for the love of all that’s holy, do not stare at anything even remotely near the edge of that towel! But Carey never was any good at taking orders.

~ * ~ ABOUT THE BOOK ~ * ~
This story is the second book in my series called Helldorado Mongrels MC. The series follows different immortal shifter families, a couple of humans, and the quest for stolen gold. It takes place in southern Nevada. I’d been toying with the idea for this series for the past few years after catching an episode of Haunted Highway on Syfy regarding the Hellhounds of Eldorado Canyon.

In book two, Seduced by Him, two human brothers are at the end of their camping trip in the canyon where, as teenagers, they had a frightening experience in a gold mine when confronted with wolves. Jarrod Russell, one of the heroes of this story, is jealous his brother found love, and he wonders when he’ll find his other half. Which doesn’t take long since he runs into him in a store and then in a casino.

Jarrod and Tex, the sexy stranger (who is based off of Brock O'Hurn in case you were wondering ;) ) he keeps running into, have a one night stand that’s turning into something more when Jarrod is kidnapped by Tex’s fellow Helldorado Mongrels MC members.

Want to know what happens when Jarrod finds out the guy he’s super attracted to is an immortal wolf shifter and if he escapes the Mongrels? Well, you’ll just have to read the book now, won’t you? *wink*

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~
Wolf shifter and member of the Helldorado Mongrels MC, Dante “Tex” Valentin is restless and dissatisfied. He goes on a ride in search of excitement, never expecting to encounter his mate—a human male, who disrupts his world.

Jarrod Russell is envious his brother, Cameron, found love. Wondering if fortune will ever smile on him the same way, he runs into a man who rocks his world. A man he believes could be the love of his life.

When Jarrod and Tex’s paths cross again, a passion-filled night connects them. Because of who they are, though, they’re in danger from the Mongrels. Will their relationship be over before they even have a chance to love?

Be Warned: m/m sex, anal sex, language, violence

~ * ~ ADULT EXCERPT ~ * ~
The blond haired man without a name stood naked in his room.

Bare as the day he was born, too, Tex sat on the edge of the bed, leaning back on his elbows, and took in the view.

Tall, athletic physique. Classically handsome features with a full mouth. Cock that sported a slight curve. It didn’t appear to be overly big but still seemed to be larger than average. Just like he liked a man’s dick.

“What do you want me to do? Please. Tell me.”

He loved it when his partners had the touch of pleading in their voices, had amorous longing in their gazes, begging him to take them and use them as he saw fit. But this blond-haired, blue-eyed beauty wasn’t like the others. The lean, well-toned man didn’t fit the type of guy he’d normally go after—big, brawny, and rough around the edges—much like himself and the other Mongrels. No, the stranger from the store was the complete opposite, almost angelic, and the thought of claiming him sent lusty rivers of heat down into his rigid shaft.

“I want you to drop to your knees before me, take my cock in that luscious mouth of yours and suck me dry.”

A visible shudder racked the man’s body, and for a second he looked as if he might refuse, but then he closed the distance between them and knelt.

The angel positioned himself between Tex’s thighs and gently grasped his length. The bend of his fingers stroked him, feeling like the finest linen glancing against his skin. Tex’s body sizzled as his man’s appraisal of his body seemed to devour him. Then the stranger licked and kissed his cock and balls, sucked him into his mouth, and Tex felt as if he’d arrived home.

The guy laved its length and circled his fingers around its base, then traced the underside with the tip of his tongue and feathered his ball sack with the ends of his fingers.

Tex let his head fall back, enjoying the way the guy took command of his cock and savoring the delicate feel of the man’s moist and warm mouth on his shaft and his hands as they smoothed up his body.

So soft. Such a gentle caress. I love the way he’s touching me. Not enough though. Need to…

September Accountability

We're heading into Autumn and I'm thinking about werewolves. My plan for after the current Amber Morgan project is done is to move onto the next Urban Wolf book. I've also got the start of the next Luporum book floating around in my head, and some whispers of a stand-alone werewolfy urban fantasy romance revenge thing that I'm not even touching because I cannot start any new projects this year even though I did already.

My aim is to finish the Amber Morgan book this month, and move onto Urban Wolf 6 in October. I am hoping for first round edits on IMPERIAL DEMONS this month as well, though, so we'll see.

I'm trying to clear a few extra things out of my life this month to free up more time for writing, as well as squeezing a few new things in. I'm supposed to be doing daily physio for my knackered shoulder, which...doesn't always happen. I'm also supposed to be going to the gym and working on a routine to build the strength in both my arms up, which...hasn't happened at all, because as a hardcore introvert, the idea of going to the gym just horrifies me. But I suppose I should figure something out before I'm next due at the doctor and have to explain to him why I've been slacking off on all this stuff.

So we're approaching the change of the seasons, and I'm trying to make some simple life changes. I'm also letting go (or at least putting on hiatus) some writing and non-writing creative projects that have been causing me some anxiety to varying degrees this year. I'm not trying to be vague, I'm just not sure there's anything interesting to say about them, except that letting them go/putting them on hiatus is ultimately going to make me happier and more productive for the rest of the year.

So! That's September. Stay tuned for news on IMPERIAL DEMONS as and when I get it!

Flashback Friday - Gale Stanley provides your werewolf fix

It's September! My favourite time of year. It's still bright, but the air is cool and crisp and I can start wearing hoodies again without melting. I am not designed for summer. Anyway! What better way to kick off a new month than with a werewolf tale? Gale Stanley is here with just such a story. Why not treat yourself?

In a world where reproduction is the number one priority, a gay wolf shifter could never be an alpha. So Logan hides his secret from the pack and resigns himself to a life without love.

Then one night, he finds his true mate and he’s forced to make a choice.
